Medat customer “Labor Koblenz” detects mutations of the corona virus by means of PCR tests

The corona pandemic is still omnipresent in Germany. Medat laboratory information system works together with our customers to counter current challenges.

The long-standing Medat customer “Labor Koblenz” has been working to the limit for almost a year due to the corona tests. Now the employees of the laboratory are facing a new major challenge: new, highly infectious mutations of the virus.

Mutations can now be detected much faster by using PCR tests. What used to take up to five days now takes around 24 hours. 44 mutations were found in 574 cases, 41 times the English variant and three times the variants from Brazil / South Africa.

The new mutation PCR method saves the researchers in our laboratories a great deal of time compared to genome sequencing. The medical director of the microbiology of the “Labor Koblenz”, Dr. Thomas Mertes, is convinced that the PCR test helps to prevent the further spread of the corona variants.

DEMIS acceleration campaign by the BMG and RKI

In close cooperation with the A.L.M., the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) and the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Medat Laborinformationssysteme is working to support German laboratories in the corona crisis.

An acceleration campaign for electronic and automated reporting channels is currently being carried out from the medical laboratories to the
public health departments worked for Covid-19 test results.

At the moment, these are reported by the laboratories or other bodies to the responsible health authority. Here, the classic way via fax or email is used, which increases the bureaucratic effort for the people involved extremely.

For this reason, Medat is working together with the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG), the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) and the A.L.M. to accelerate the DEMIS project (German Electronic Reporting and Information System for Infection Protection) and to establish it as quickly as possible . The aim is to create a quick and effective solution for all concerned, which the Covid 19 test results must be transmitted in electronic form.

Two new tools: Covid 19 test results can be called up digitally

Patients can now access the test results of their COVID-19 test online. The startup DoctorBox, together with the Becker & Kollegen laboratory, which is equipped with Medat laboratory software, has developed a tool with which test results can be called up more quickly and the health care system is relieved. In conjunction with the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KV), over 1,950 test results have already been passed on online to those affected. The interface is compatible with Medat laboratory information systems and test facilities are now available free of charge.

With  Telekom Healthcare Solutions,  BS Software Development  has also developed an app that speeds up the process of transmitting results by four to eight hours. The Medat customer  Labor Dr. Wisplinghoff  from Cologne, who has already implemented the app in their system like around ten other laboratories and carries out around 5,000 Covid 19 tests daily. The COVID-19 app is free of charge for the laboratory and patients and is available in the  Google Play Store  and  the App Store .

Both tools directly access data provided by Medat laboratory software. In addition, laboratories equipped with Medat software are able to transmit test results from Covid-19 tests to the patient within 24 hours. This makes Medat laboratory information systems significantly faster than conventional LIS.
